Joanne, a third-generation Japanese American, comes from a patriotic family. But when World War II started, they, along with other Japanese living in the U.S., were rounded up and sent to internment camps for the duration of the war. She tells her daughter Pam that the conditions at the camp were degrading. In addition, most of those who were interned lost everything. Joanne’s family was one of the lucky ones. A local family took over their grocery store until they were able to return to Seattle. Edit credit: Mike Addis
