Thu and 30 members of her extended family left Vietnam by boat for the United States in 1981. While still in the South China Sea, pirates robbed all their possessions – food, water, money, compass, and boat engines a – leaving them adrift and lost at sea. After drifting aimlessly for some time, her mother says she witnessed a miracle one night: Two white shadows pulled their boat along until morning when they finally saw land and were rescued.
